our   year

2014 demanded from us to have the humility to see the world as it is, and the audacity to continue imagining the world as it could be. This year pushed our team to have even more ambition to learn at the edge, the wisdom to admit failure, and the courage to start again.

It was a year that tested our patience, kindness and resilience; but overall, it tested our leadership. A leadership that rejected complacency and stood strongly in the premise that - we do what’s right, not what’s easy.

Life Choices creates hope in a cynical world. One step at a time, one person at time, everyone making a small difference. In the end, this becomes a ‘global family’ that changes the world.

June  2014

Picture
It started with Life Choices standing with youth, listening to voices unheard, and recognizing potential where others saw despair.

Life Choices shared one inspirational story of young people around Cape Town per day, for the month of June (National Youth Month). We celebrate youth of today and we acknowledged their courage and wisdom.

Life Choices made the decision to make youth voices a stronger part of our core business, in order to ensure that youth in Cape Town are better acknowledged and heard.

Life Choices is transitioning from a dependent NPO approach to a more sustainable business-centric model. To assist us in this effort, we recognised the need to reinvigorate our board of Directors (trustees).

“Institutions need two kinds of leaders: those who are inside and carry the active day-to-day roles, and those who stand outside but are intimately concerned and who, with the benefit of some detachment, oversee and support the active leaders. These are the trustees.

The Trustee is what the title implies, a person in whom ultimate trust is placed. There should be only one requirement: he or she must be an able, dedicated servant-leader who will work hard to assure distinguished performance of the institution in trust.”

You   Decide   campaign - November    2013

Since the beginning of Life Choices, the US government was our major sponsor, however due to international trends it decided to decrease its support to South Africa. For more than a year, Life Choices worked hard to fundraise locally without the sufficient success. With a three-month cash flow in October, Life Choices was facing the prospect of having to close its doors to those in need.

In a spirit of hope, Life Choices launched the You Decide Campaign, created to unite Capetonians to save the organisation.  Within the first two weeks of the campaign Life Choices had already secured funds to cover the expenses for the next six months.

Life Choices came out of the campaign stronger. We now had a greater understanding of our strengths and weaknesses and a certainty of the direction we needed to take in order to become sustainable.
